The goal of the AFA project was to create an ultralight trike capable of carrying a deployable cargo pod with a 100 Kg capacity. A North Wing trike was adapted to the mission. The main frame was redesigned to accomodate the pod and allow for quick removal of the main gear legs. |
A key requirement was a quick release system for the pod that allowed easy and fast pod loading and pod deployment and would be secure and failsafe during flight. |
New and pre-existing parts were modeled in SolidWorks and critical items analysed in COSMOS FEA software. The prototype test aircraft performed perfectly and the release system required no changes or modifications. |
Pods are released from the trike at a low altitude of two to four feet off the ground and at approximately 40 MPH. Since a landing is not required for delivering the pod, the AFA trike concept is perfectly suited to delivering relief supplies to diaster victims in uneven terrain or debris covered areas. |
